What is Self Talk?
Self-Talk is your mission statement of what you want out of life and what you are willing to give for it. Your self-talk should be repeated aloud at least 100 to 400 times a day.
Since birth, you have been programmed to have certain beliefs and to accept the environment around you as reality. However, the problem is that these beliefs belong to the media, preachers, teachers, parents, people in general, and not necessarily yours. So you need to challenge your beliefs and see which ones are serving you to reach your goals, and the ones that are holding you back.
Once you have identified the ones you want to replace with a new belief, then you are ready to develop your own personal self-talk.
Start Thinking about Your Self-Talk
Your self-talk will constantly change until you are fully connected with it. As you continue down your journey of personal development, you will discover who you truly are and your self-talk will reflect it.
There are countless ways you can begin to think of what you want in your self–talk. Here are just a few examples:
- Repeat Inspirational Quotes
Your self-talk should inspire you. Until you can find your own words, borrow the words of your favorite quotes.
“To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.” Kahlil Gibran
- State What You Want to Change
Because of your past programming, you may have the belief that you are too fat, too thin, too tall, too short, too dumb, or too anything negative. Start out with a simple self-talk that incorporates what you want to change.
“I am smart” or “I am pretty” repeated several times a day will program your mind to accept these new beliefs and before you know it you will begin to feel smarter and prettier because that is now your new belief.
- Incorporate the Eight Positive Emotions with Gratitude
There are eight positive emotions: love, sex, romance, desire, enthusiasm, hope, faith and prosperity. By showing gratitude towards your positive emotions along with what you already have will only produce more good things for you to be grateful for.
“I am grateful for the LOVE I have for my family.”
“I am grateful for the DESIRE to change my life.”
“I am grateful for the HOPE and FAITH that my future is changing for the better.” - Emulate Your Mentor
This is a good place to start. There are millions of great mentors to emulate; however; some of these self-talks may make you feel uneasy because you may not be able to at first connect to their self-talk.
For example: one of my mentors begins with “I am having fun building the largest, most profitable network marketing organization…” Being a frustrated network marketer, you may not be convinced that you can build such an organization. Find one that you can comfortably connect with.
Connecting with Your Self-Talk
One way to connect with your self-talk is through your emotions. Surround your self-talk with the eight positive emotions: love, sex, romance, desire, enthusiasm, hope, faith and prosperity. Your subconscious mind reacts to how you are feeling. Therefore, if you are feeling good, your subconscious mind gets the message that you want more good feelings.
Another way to connect with your-self talk is to start with something small that you believe is obtainable. Once you begin to experience the positive shift in your thinking, then you can build upon your self-talk into anything you desire, no matter how big the dream.
Conclusion
Remember your self-talk does not have to perfect the first time around. The important thing is to just get started. At first it may seem like a major task to say your self-talk 100 to 400 times every day; however, eventually you will start saying your self-talk without even thinking about it.

Hi Tam, So happy you brought the subject of Self Talk up. Also the way you explained to connect it with feelings. It is awesome. I have been doing this for 8 months now in a group of mindfulness and it is starting to become part of me. I strongly suggest to readers to give this a try. You may not “get it” the first time, but don’t stop. Take the challenge and you will see the difference it makes.
cheers,
Donna
Thank you, David!
